A hero's action is always extraordinary because it is so contrary to the basic human instincts of self-preservation and survival. For the fighter ace, it is often "kill or be killed". The men whose images and stories are told in Wings of Valorreflect the courage and determination it takes to get no less than five "kills" in aerial combat and return from each mission alive. |

Building his case out of research from US, British, and German archives, and from interviews with submarine veterans, Anthony Newpower presents a study of the politics and technology behind the high failure rate of US torpedoes early in WWII. His investigation focuses on the defects in the Mark XIV, which often ran deeper than the set depth, detonated prematurely, and/or failed to explode on hitting a target. |

Focusing on the oceanic war rather than the war in the Great Lakes, this study charts the War of 1812 from the perspectives of the two opposing navies at sea. Instead of describing battles between opposing warships, McCranie evaluates entire cruises by American and British men-of-war, noting both successes and failures and how they translated into broader strategies. |

For more than two decades at the beginning of the 20th century William S. Sims was at the forefront of naval affairs. Despite his dramatic impact on the US Navy in the first half of the 20th century, Sims is a relatively unknown figure today. This collection of six essays written by Sims illustrates why his thinking and leadership are still relevant to the challenges faced in the 21st century. |

Offers a provocative and challenging thesis to conventional wisdom regarding international politics and national security: that we fail to understand the challenges and dangers and lack a mindset to cope with new 21st century realities. Ullman argues that while the dangers are not remotely as destructive as a world war, unless they are addressed, the standard of living and expectations of Americans will decline and at worst, the world will become more violent, unpredictable and chaotic. |

The main theme of Fire on the Water is that conventional measures of military balance underestimate the threat that China's military modernization poses to the US position in the Asia-Pacific region. It argues that the US needs to fashion a new and competitive strategy, one that better matches its strengths and those of its allies against China's vulnerabilities, in order to maintain a balance of power in the region and convince China's leaders to pursue a cooperative course. |

Examines the transformation of the US Navy as a fighting organisation that took place on the North Atlantic Station between 1874 and 1897. The process of the development of an American battle fleet resulted in the construction of a new organisational identity for the North Atlantic Squadron. This process was as critical as the eventual outcome. The results of this study demonstrate that the US government had an interest in developing an offensive naval combat capability as early as the 1870s. |

During World War I, the US Navy conducted at the Portsmouth, NH Naval Prison what many penal scholars consider the most ambitious experiment in the history of progressive prison reform. Cell doors remained opened, prisoners governed themselves and thousands of rehabilitated prisoners were returned to the fleet. This experiment stood in stark contrast to the inhumane flogging of prisoners that had dominated naval discipline until 1850. The Navy's journey between these two extremes is the subject of this study. |

Provides fresh perspectives on the international strategic environment between the two world wars. While the London Conference of 1930 showed that the great powers could cooperate to control their rivalries in armaments, the arms agreement was not destined to last. An examination of yesterday's competition among the great powers to fight at sea offers sobering lessons for national security professionals concerned with the current-day naval, cyber, and aerospace competition. |

Offers a comprehensive assessment of the air contribution to the three weeks of major combat that ended the rule of Iraq's Saddam Hussein in 2003. Unlike in the earlier instance of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the role of allied air power in the nation's second war against Iraq was not apparent to most observerss. Lambeth's work fills a long-standing gap in the literature on modern warfare by telling that story of the role of airpower for the first time in the fullest detail. |

Offers a narrative account of ONR's efforts to respond to transformation amidst increasing pressure to focus on programmes directly relevant to the Navy, but without sacrificing the pursuit of fundamental science. Told through the eyes of the admirals leading ONR and the department heads who oversee key programmes, it holds great lessons and insights for how the U.S. government should fund and maintain military R&D in a new era of smaller conflicts in unconventional arenas. |

This is a story of adventure in the Hindu Kush Mountains and of a previously untold military and naval intelligence mission during World War II by two American officers along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They passed through the tribal areas and the princely states of the North-West Frontier Province, and into Baluchistan. This appears to be the first time that any American officials were permitted to travel along either side of the Durand Line. |

As the book will illustrate, China in the past meddled in the affairs of Africa, in places like Algeria, Ghana, and Tanzania. It did so for self-interest, for the benefit of the Communist Party of China, specifically its leaders' strategic objective, which was to demonstrate influence in the world. |

The books that have been written about it emphasise the role of infantrymen, armour, and US Marines.
